Considering that I enjoy biking around, doing so around the Pokemon world doesn't sound so bad. I'd need some income to keep myself and my 'mons alive, so I could get involved with classified delivery and look for more consistent jobs from there.
I'd start with a pokemon that's easily accessible to me (geographically speaking, Cacnea, Spearow, and Bunnelby fit the bill). I wouldn't go out of the way to get any old pokemon; that's an investment of everything.
