German Gen 1 names are really weird, most aren't really portmanteaus, they are usually just 1 or 2 parts something related to the Pokémon and the rest is just "it sounds kinda cool I guess". Marowak for example is called "Knogga", the "kno" part is from "Knochen" (bone) but the rest is literally nothing, just some made up shit. It's weird. The only gen 1 mon I think has a better name in German compared to English is Persian (which is a dogshit name). It's "Snobilikat" which ironically also works in English (snob + nobility + cat).
One of the laziest and also funniest German names is definitely Chikorita: Endivie. That's literally German for "endive". Not even a different spelling, just literally the act same word as the vegetable. No idea what the localisation team was smoking there.
