The kids from Digimon are often hand-picked by destiny to save the world, and eventually return to their ordinary responsibilities in real-life Japan by the end of each series. Whereas Pokemon is a limitless fantasyscape that anyone can self-insert to. Ash is a character on an endless journey, so grown up fans will recognize the series years after they've aged out (Ash winning the Alola League made fucking headline news).
Digimon are usually tied to their kid's development, or reflection of some part of who they are. But Pokemon lets you create a party of whoever you want, out of hundreds of creatures designed to appeal to everyone.
Digimon's games are experimental almost to a fault, and never established a clear gameplay identity. They always do something a bit different, from open world exploration to traditional JRPG and SRPG. Pokemon has a recognizable core identity, with numerous spin-offs designed for experimentation.
