>Do they ever earn each other's respect?In Charizard Chills, it got frozen by a Poliwrath and almost died. Ash spent the night caring for it which reminded it of how much Ash cared for it. It became loyal to Ash from that point on. If I can remember correctly, after that was Charizard learning how to team-up with Pikachu since even though it was loyal to Ash, it didn't get along with others.
It all came to a conclusion in Charicific Valley (a valley of the strongest and biggest Charizards) where it realized it wasn't the strongest. It lost again and again, realized it had to grow up so it decided to stay behind and get stronger. It's where pic related (left) came from. Ash ran away pretending he doesn't care about Charizard so it can stay behind without worries. It was up to Pikachu to say goodbye.
So yeah, it was basically a child that loved its parents -> became a teenager that rebelled -> faced failure and realized how big the world is -> decided to grow up. It coming back bigger, stronger and confident of itself was it hitting its adult phase. It even got a girlfriend.
