The reason why Pikachu is so popular and marketable is because it's much more gender neutral and can be cute AND cool (like in pic related), thus appealing to a broader audience. The Japanese market might be more okay with stuff that is exclusively kawaii uguu but that shit doesn't work in America where even Kirby has to be made angry. The anime absolutely would have never become as popular as it is now if Ash had a Clefairy instead of Pikachu.
