It's a show thats main audience is children and young teens. A lot of Ash's actions have to do with keeping his pokemon group small enough for young people to remember it, and cycling through them each generation so the new young fans who didn't watch the previous seasons understand what's happening.
If you're talking about the character without taking that stuff into account, it's pointless.
