Emerald was a bit harder but the same thing applied except for those that used rental pokemon and what not.
And one thing people forget on the battle frontier is that this was before any wifi stuff and it was way harder to find anything competitive so this was the first time the majority of people came close to anything that really felt competitive.
It gave an actual challenge, it rewarded you with in game items and it was really fun, specially stuff like pyramid.
Getting to the top of the pyramid after a long challenge and then finding out Brandon has the fucking regis wasn't a thing most of us experienced at the time, not to mention more post game is always good.
