People liked Gen 3's new pokemon while the reason for it's dip was due to Gen 2 being underwhelming along with the transition to the GBA was really visually stimulating enough to market. Gen 4 got extremely good reception even with their new pokemon. You can't say people didn't like the lack of Kanto pandering when Gen 5 kept trying to poorly mimic Gen 1 pokemon. And if Masuda cared about the criticisms, he would've cut back on annoying story segments that people hated in Gen 5.
