Each of the "three kingdoms" has a league of their own which you must beat along with three gyms to get a visa into another kingdom, eventually landing you in Svalbard where you take on the "real" league. Iceland and the Faroes are postgame territory, while you start in Åland.
Gyms provide actual services such recurring battles and various minigames, most towns have one, but only a few hand out badges.
There's no evil team up to the E4, it's mostly exploring, catching and battling shit, while learning about the rich history and culture of the region. You're just a kid, nobody gives a shit about you or wants you to save the world. But once you beat the E4, you'll deal with them as a champion. As things should be.
I haven't really thought much about new characters or Pokemon, I don't know enough about the native animals to make a call.
