It's just a marketing ploy. The same way their masked superheroes need to get a power boost that changes their look halfway through the show, it is thus that beloved/ignored Pokemon are getting a spotlight thrown on them in the same manner. This is for the kids, if anything.
I don't think it's that big a deal. For one thing, they're seemed to have made it an entirely negligible mechanic so you can choose whether or not you want to have any part of it.
