I remember finding Kanto and Orange Islands fun, Johto boring, I didn't watch Hoenn, Sinnoh was good (watched only some episodes), watched only the beginning of BW and I liked it, and I watched a couple episodes of XY.
It seems the very early episodes of the anime had a certain lightness to them which doesn't exist anymore and the anime has become more "child friendly".
