Vanilluxe works for BW because it has a much stronger fantasy bent, with a nonsensically designed region and a plot that revolves around descendants of royalty and their pet dragons. I think after Gen 5 GF stopped giving any thought about how mons fit with each other and just throws whatever into the game like its a community stew.
Another issue is the amount of detail is declining. It seems like GF is opting for designs that're easier to model, which is another source of friction. Compare Baxcalibur to Tyranitar and notice how stiff & flat the former looks in comparison.
