The moves don't make much sense with it though.
The stuff on its back isn't connected to its nervous system and has to be controlled using psychic powers. As they grow up, they become increasingly skilled in using this substance. It is very maleable, but can also be hardened or softened on command, making them able physical fighters and defenders. They're psychic skills are strong out of necessity, but non-physical attacks interfere with their ability to control it.
Also the design is supposed to be a play on my birthday/year. I'm born in the year of the boar and according to doubutsu-urenai I'm a golden elephant, which I thought worked better than using a fish.
