they're not "artificial" and they're not complicated, which is the main point here. it's a turtle with cannons. two simple concepts, which easily fit together given the visual similarity to tanks.
what's artificial is taking an otter and slapping a samurai theme on it. there's no logical connection between the two, and while they could have adapted it to the creature's physique, they didn't. they gave it actual held swords when neither the animal nor design are built for it.
the precise melee fighting style doesn't fit its awkward body, so it feels forced. at least blastoise's fighting style makes sense for a large sea creature fighting on land, and its tank design plays to that. that's why samurott is a fucking mess.
