I'm about 3 hours in and I've just reached the shopping district - Does it get better? It's certainly not bad, but this hand holding is obnoxious, as well as the back and forth. Usually by this point I've already beaten the first 2 gyms, and getting a solid team comp together.
I don't mind a story, it can add a lot, but it's just so excessive, especially so early in the game.
