This is the second time in fairly short succession that the writers did a subplot of the CotD are secretly in love and eventually take over the family business together. Pasta La Vista, the last episode of ADV Battle, had more or less the same dynamic, including May squeeing and Brock getting cucks (with hilarious results). Now that's not a lot, but it does seem like the type of thing you'd iterate on to reflect on the relationship of the MCs, although May and Ash are not that. It would've been cool to do for XY, if only for Serena's perspective on it, but I don't think they ever used this type of subplot. Closest thing to it was the episode where Jessie fell in love and almost left Team Rocket -- also an episode where the TRio is presented as a morally okay group and not the medicine stealing sociopaths that they are.
It's always gratifying when I ramble and it somehow comes full circle.
