In my case I tend to think of what the OC themselves would do, like if they couldn't really come up with a name a title just sticks, i. e. a smaller Pokemon called "pipsqueak", and the name just sticks even after evolving into something bigger. Or if they were children when they caught their Pokemon, so it has a cutesy or dorky name like "Gigantitron" or "Mr. Chusies" and it just doesn't respond to anything else at that point.
Human names for Pokemon would be for a fairly bland character, I think. Catching a Bidoof and just naming it "Bob".
