Don't get me wrong some Big to areas like it's caves are top notch however it gets fucked silly by it's level curve and Pokemon distribution.
The game Exp curve literally falls apart after you get Surf so the Ecruteak pitchfork feels like a punishment instead of a reward despite all the bonus backtracking options uou supposedly just unlocked.
I'm nostalgic as fuck for Johto FUNgeons but the game got issues they didn't bother to fix in gen4 remakes, they worried to much about a coat of paint and threw us a bone with walking Pokemon, some eggmoves and guaranteed IV passing with the power items but outside of a few extra areas the Kanto and Johto games were pathetic.
I might even say that Sevii islands is more substantial than the fluff they added in HGSS.
