>>43067275Frankly, I think most people who get stingy about this stuff are the ones who don't draw, because otherwise they'd know it's just fun. But if I could give one all-encompassing answer, it would be "whatever makes sense within the context of your scenario".
For example, the group I'm in has Quests where some seriously mutated unique Pokemon can be found that make sense due to how they came about, and an Underdark where things are as a whole bigger, scarier and blinder, and some of them look only vaguely like what they typically do - and that's fully alright. To be "safe" though, with mons that my OCs start with and such, I just like to combine the base species with some aspects of their father-side heredity, like the Cranidos above, and this Ribombee that has Leavanny heredity and a leaf-cloak supposedly woven by its father.
