I went all the way back to Dewford on my Tropius to grab the Old Rod and catch a Magikarp. Although Wynaut knows Splash I didn't want to risk it surviving one of their psychic attacks in the red, which can happen with one of their Gym Trainers. I know this because I tried to just get it over with using Wynaut, then it survived against a Gym Trainer, which made me reset.
Anyway, Tate and Liza did actually require me to use my brain to win. Bulk Up and Fighting Attacks weren't going to cut it because they do way too much damage right off the bat. For those who may have forgotten, the twins lead with Xatu and Claydol, so you're either going to get hit with a psychic-or-ground-type attack. I replaced Blaziken's Sky Uppercut with Overheat, which one-shot Claydol. This makes Tate send out Solrock, which will pretty reliably (I say this because it did it twice) use Sunny Day right after it comes out. I used the Sunny Day boosted Overheat to one-shot Xatu. Then I Double Kicked Lunatone and Solrock for the win. It actually did take me a few tries. I was able to do it without relying on items though.
