Anyway, there's definitely some nostalgia pandering at play for the Gen I skew but there's also just the fact that something people forget is lot of Gen I mons are iconic / beloved for a reason: it's because they have excellent fucking designs. I don't like Gen I pandering in mainline titles (I think they should instead focus on the new mons) but for a crossgen spinoff like Unite, it makes perfect sense.
Maybe I'm just biased though and it doesn't really bother me because a lot of the weirder picks (Slowbrro, Crustle, Trevenant, Cramorant) are all mons I really like.
