Pokemon is lost, not due to GameFreak though. It's the highest grossing media franchise in history, and at his point I can't denounce corporations for acting like corporations. We live in a consumerist world, and this whale of a franchise makes a lot of people a lot of money. Any franchise/IP this big, in this world, is destined to become soulless. It's just too big of a franchise at this point to satisfy everyone. As a day 1 fan, I am upset, but at the same time that's how it goes.
While I don't think it's unreasonable that an actually good Pokemon game be made for veteran/modern day fans, there must be numbers I don't know about to justify not doing it. RIP
