It may also have something to do with the faint traces of ambiguously red stains lining the wall, and the abrupt 'H E L P' scrawled alongside them.

Assuming Mr. 'W' was feeling delusional, it's not entirely out of the question.. Hopefully he's left some incriminating evidence for you to fish out.
A) Take a closer look at the remnants of the hole. What's that shoddy handiwork?
B) Hm? A turtle shell? Examine it.
C) Inspect the dark gray puddle in the corner.
