In some Pokemon games, roads outside of towns are represented with dirt roads, like in pic related.
The problem with this is that the roads show a boundary between sand and grass, or dirt and grass. Which means they only work on grassy routes, not desert routes like these ones.
Furthermore, most pathway tiles have a grassy border. The only ones which don't are the brown-and-grey ones I'm using for most of the desert routes here.
tl;dr tileset limitations.
