I think what makes Gen 1 pokemon so appeaking compared to nu-gen pokemon are the colors.
Most Gen 1 mons are pretty much monochromatic. Their colors feel pretty organic and when several are used they bland well.
Meanwhile, many nu-gen designs are a mess of colors that often don't fir together well. Not to mention they tend to chose shitty colors that looks bad to begin with, like these dark blue and dark green hues that are far too common and often paired with the worst possible pick as secondary color.
