I remember back in the day I bought a shinning Raichu for 20 bucks on eBay and they sent me a shinning tyranitar instead because apparently it was a random shinning lot and not a specific one and too this day I still don't have a shinning Raichu. >Is it just a value/investment thingAbsolutely not, it's pure hobby for me, for example I've been collecting since the very beginning and have lots of extra wotc stuff and despite the whole boom of the past 2 years I haven't sold a single pokemon card. That's not to say I don't enjoy value/investment talk since it is nice to see my collection go up in value but in all honesty I'll probably never sell and I'll just pass it on when I die and they can do whatever the fuck they want with it.
