I even made a little plot concept and everything.
Protag is given a Cyndaquil. He's a bit afraid to explore the world, but he bonds quickly with the little guy. Soon, Elm's Totodile gets stolen, which convinces protag to go get it back. This gets him to meet the medium. They're friends, but also friendly rivals, they have several battles along the show. But they're also a pair of goofs, so the picknicker girl, who was given the Chikorita, is there to sort of ground them in reality, even if she's pretty snarky about it. They're all good friends.
The plot of season 1 would be to get strong enough to catch Silver and bring him to justice. He wins most of the encounters he has with the protag and his friends, but all the gym leaders the protag encounters tell him that he should really consider entering a big tournament. Not the league, just a particular tournament.
The protag eventually starts to ask himself why he's fighting, why he trains his Pokémon, and if it should all be over when he catches Silver. After beating Clair, the protag and his friends enter the tournament. Silver enters too. The day before the tournament, Silver approaches the protag and demands a fight. They fight to a standstill, with Typhlosion and Feraligatr falling at the same time. Silver seems kind of glad about this. They both advance to the finals, and the protag wins this time. However, the protag learns that, even if what Silver did was wrong, all the battles he had, all the things he told Silver made him learn his lesson. The protag takes the tournament win, and Silver kinda just fucks off to make up for his crime or whatever.
Right at the end of the season, the protag would fight Lance and get absolutely DECIMATED. This would lead him and his friends to travel around Kanto for season 2 in order to prep for a rematch.
