There was this one really harsh moment in D/P/Pt that I really fucking loved and I'm sad they never did anything like it again.
Cyrus is a character who isn't like most villains in the series, he's this dissonant and alien individual at even a glance, and yet is oddly charismatic, getting what he wants not by abusing or belittling his henchmen, but by putting on a facade of caring for them and earning their trust, a theme which even his Pokemon reflect (Crobat evolves via friendship).
So when he finishes his 'inspirational' rally and sends his grunts off to Mt Coronet, and you try to go after him, you finally get a peek of his real self, this apathetic bastard who doesn't even entertain your insignificant ass with a battle. You're waved off, and told to go free the lake spirits, who he's already performed morbid enough surgeries on to make even his most loyal men disgusted with themselves, to get his red chain. He doesn't care if the pokemon are in pain, but he also doesn't get his jollies off on their agony, totally disinterested in them outside of the utility they provided. Just like he's totally disinterested and unconcerned with you.
And that's just it. You can't save them, and you can't fix what's happened. You're left to toddle into the medical room, one of the few places in any pokemon game where no music plays, and this numb sort of defeat sinks on as you let the lake spirits out. It was a rare dose of actual defeat in the series that I felt really added to the menacing presence of Cyrus. Wish more shit like that happened
