They were so concerned about Yokai Watch and how Gen 6 only did "okay" that they came up with this borderline schizo-tier plan to make alternatives for Bank and a shift in series direction to milk more money. If they didn't get a dose of reality with the comparatively poor sales (despite arguably better reception) SM got, they might have switched the series over completely mobile.
Data from the leaks also suggests things like the PSS were too intensive on servers, since a theoretical Z version would have had it, it of course got canned because everything they had planned for it could just be repurposed in later titles, like Magearna/Zygarde's forms and Ultra Space.
There was also a noted major shift in development for SM at one point, while it was initially seemed to take more after the Kalos games in gameplay and creative elements, they decided that a more Yokai Watch-style gameplay would be better for the games. Then they also decided to cut gyms and cobble up trials in the debugging phase to make the game more unique. It's why the reference to Alola in XY mentions a champion despite Final-Alola not having even a league yet.
