This is why Magcargo is known to have an incredibly high surface temperature but one gets hugged in the anime, why Team Rocket survives direct attacks from the protagonist 'mons yet characters often fear great injury from wild Pokemon, and why using a Hyper Beam against a low-level rebattle doesn't wipe their L5 Pidgey from the face of the planet.
And, of course, how some Pokemon bond with their Trainers by eating them for a while. So long as the Pokemon doesn't want to kill them and can get them back out, it's perfectly safe. Not recommended with wild Pokemon, though, since they're probably looking for food and *will* kill.
