Wackos shooting people are pretty rare, but given the immense size of the country + mass media, it looks far more common that it really is.
People mainly die from disease (most of which are related to bad diets and substance abuse), suicide, and accidents in the USA. More people here die from injuries sustained in rape or getting physically beaten badly than getting shot with a firearm as most people don't carry guns around.
