I was watching some of the old episodes out of nostalgia. He gets almost killed by his old trainer by being sent out in the rain. Ash and friends saved him and he become a loyal bro since then.
After he evolved, he becomes a useless dick. He disobeys Ash the guy who SAVED him and makes things worse for him. Ash could have won the Indigo Championship but he just falls asleep.
At first I thought it was suppose to be like the trading and lack of badges like in the game but the circumstances were different and he is a dick even when Ash got the Earth Badge.
I never understood that. Is there an explanation?
