i like the development angle on the villains. the conflict between developers and the people who live on the lands that they want to develop is a really interesting real world situation. it's not simple either. often the people who want to develop an area really do what to enrich the local communities by bringing in more money and providing services that are lacking but at the same time it is very indignant to think of yourself as a savior to people who never asked for help. often developers get frustrated that the very people they imagine they are going to be benefitting are refusing to give in to their plans.
to me it feels like it has possibilities for depth. having the golems used as a means of clear cutting forests and such makes a lot of sense too because they represent different phases of civilization. i think it would be best to make the conflict more about development issues than environment issues overall because in a series that is focussed on wild creatures who live alongside humans environmental issues are often center stage. gentrification would be a good alternative.
