Gen 1 in Tajiri's was meant to be a niche JRPG. But, the games broke out in Japan and GF decided to make gen 2. Gen 1 also broke out here in the west in 1998-2000. This resulted in the idea to expand the Pokemon brand into a global franchise and gen 3 was conceptualized during the release of gen 2 in Japan.
