Pikachu makes a great first impression because the yellow is the first thing you see and it leads into his lighting bolt tail that can pass as a fantasy animal quirk, whereas Raichu's coloring leads the eyes all over the place and his lightning bolt tail is too obvious. I think that helps Raichu as an evolved form because losing that perfect compactness gives an air of Pikachu having "matured", while still being your small squeezable mouse friend, but that works because Pikachu is first in your mind.
