Pokerus is an interesting topic in terms of lore. It's apparently a virus that pokemon catch from other pokemon. It's a helpful virus, though, and only has positive effects. The pokemon will only actually be infected and contagious until the clock strikes midnight, but the benefits of the experience boost lasts forever for that pokemon.
