I like both, and think it's apples and oranges, but the games haven't seen nearly the same amount of success, so much so that there are lots of unlocalized games because they know the games will be failures.
Also, they stopped doing the whole V-pet device things in this glorious age of technology, so I'd say Digimon is already defeated.
