The sprites were only 16x16 so they had to have very simple shapes yet still be expressive and dynamic. You could tell just from certain features if you had a good or bad character. That carried over in the 2004 reboot, but once color screen Tamagotchis became the norm and the anime and Tama iD gave us Lovelitchi, all of the new heavily-promoted female characters introduced since have just been clones of her.
