Help catching Heracross

Some say X specific tree yeilds heracross, some say that some trees will never have heracross but other trees will have heracross 30% of the time. Random Gamefaqs poster says you have to headbutt "mountain" trees instead of forest trees.

If I just pick a random Azalea town tree, will I just get one eventually? I've been going for a couple hours.

Bonus question: is Heracross the hardest pokemon to catch in Crystal?
