The problem is the anime gave the wrong impression that contests are for girls and that is made worse by the fact that gen 4 contests made them gimmicky and girly. I think one mistake the anime contests made is not including the five category system (Cool, Tough, Beautiful, Clever and Cute). The latest version of contests in BDSP are really contests in name only since it removes actual contest part and just has dancing. I unironically would have liked "The Super Contest Hall Project has started!" because BDSP contests are a slap on the face for anyone who liked the original gen 3 contests and actually wanted something good done with the idea.
