Remember the writers also love Ash's Corphish so much that:
1. It came back for DP even if it wasn't used in the league.
2. It was in BW's ending alongside Charizard/Snorlax.

I don't know what it is but Corphish is probably one of the writers favorite pokemon. For something that's not a starter we usually see it.
