Team Rocket sucks. I say this not to be provocative because I've watched the show since my childhood and I actually love the guys (Meowth's backstory especially is still one of the few complete episodes remembered by nostalgiafags for a reason), but because the writers clearly have no fucking idea what to do with them, and haven't for about a decade. About 80% of the time they show up in an episode now you just groan because you know they're only there to be a 5-minute obstacle to take up time in the episode. I feel like as characters they've been sanded over so thoroughly, and unlike Ash who kind of went through the same thing, they don't have a relatively consistent progression to their goals to at least make you want to follow them week to week.
To be fair, I get that after a show has gone on this long, it's not like you can just constantly pile on new backstory onto old characters without it getting ridiculous, but I'd say around the midpoint of BW they just haven't even really tried with the guys. Back during ADV and DP you at least had Jessie participating in Contests, and BW started off okay because they wanted to reboot them as more serious villains, but when that didn't pan out instead of returning to their pre-BW style of using them, they were just used as time fillers in episodes from then on. SM stumbled onto a semi-interesting idea by having them participate in the league, but unfortunately that was half baked as well. As far as JN goes at least they came up with the gachapon idea to make them a good way to showcase a variety of Pokemon over time, but that's purely a surface level thing and doesn't really allow them to have meaningful interactions with jari-boy and friends anymore.
Anyway, that's my autism post for the day. Not trying to troll or anything here, hopefully I can spark a discussion with this.
