Errant's Hearth, the sequel to Scholar’s Folly, I find to be much more fulfilling. It’s a work that perfectly demonstrates Tex's strengths as a writer when it comes to characterization. The plot itself is just a quiet series of scenes, too. It's fluff, pure and simple, and that in itself allows for so much more room to breathe. Not only is The Errant's Hearth is the perfect expansion to its predecessor. If Scholar's Folly is the front gate, then Errant's Hearth is the first glimpse you get into the impact this series can have. Just don’t get too used to the tone.
The next three fics, short as they are, are meant to lead into the crown jewel of the series, Au Coup Par Coup. Bearing in mind that this series is ordered chronologically, not by publishing order, these little snippets are bite-sized snacks to get you acclimated. Maison is an early statement of Lumiose, and plays a part in demonstrating the antithesis of Errant's Hearth. Scholar's Folly was like stepping out into the cold night air, leading through into Errant's Hearth as you started to adjust to the temperature and became comfortable. Alive and it's little tumor of a predecessor are like jumping head-fucking-first into the icy pool that is ACPC without even dipping your toes in first. It's brutal, and that's all you're going to get before you're plunged into The Big One.
Au Coup Par Coup is the largest single piece of work in the Homunculus series, and with every ounce of bias I can muster, is the hottest shit on the block. This fic introduces you to a new slew of characters right away, taking place on the uglier back streets of Lumiose City during a mysterious murder spree. ACPC is a brutal fusion of Mystery Noir, Crime Thriller, and a massive fucking dollup of Supernatural Horror. All of these things and more, shoved conveniently into the glowing jewel of Kalos. (cont)
