I like both games. The originals don't hold your hand nearly as much as even Gen IV games do (you can actually skip the catching tutorial!), and I prefer its artstyle to the soft look of HGSS. This was still when the series was rough around its edges and you can tell they were just starting to clean up some of the crazier ideas from RBY (i.e. actually being trapped by Bind, Wrap etc. and not being able to do anything). Being able to transfer your mons to Gen VII now is a big plus, especially considering you can dictate their nature - great if you manage to find shinies.
On the other hand HGSS has a lot more going on in the way of QoL features, like having an option to enable auto-running or being able to set two key items. Level-up movepools are a lot more helpful and new stuff like the Johto Safari Zone and the Pokeathlon are all worthwhile additions (the latter of which being a far superior minigame to Contests). I enjoyed DPPt a lot more though - the Sinnoh region is a lot more fun to explore.
