Gen 7 is somewhat more obvious because 6 got it started and they definetly thought about waifu culture with dining feature, character related stories and more dirty jokes and implications.
But why gen 6? Was it so hype for some or did most people copy the still new and not Mcdonals quality Boris? Was it the anime npc portraits or because of the internet culture at the time?
