There should always be spaces for dedicated fans of something that are gatekept, but mass popularity usually correlates to a property being able to survive and continue to produce for its fans. For instance, Jojo's runaway popularity is going to make certain that all of it gets adapted to anime eventually, and it may even get more video games in the future. That's something that some other series would kill for, and the attentionwhores and memebabies that publicly swarm around the series looking for the approval of others is just the necessary and inevitable price. The real issue is when the masses have a different idea of what they want from the property than the genuine fans, and with their more numerous and louder voices get things to sway in their shallow direction. That's what we've seen in Pokemon with the actual genwunners and Go crowd to some extent. I don't really know what can be done to stop something like this from happening, I guess that if something you really enjoy and care about becomes significantly popular you just have to hope that the masses don't have an unhealthy idea of what it should be, because you and your like will be drowned out.
