I beat it in a couple days and just powered through everything without grinding levels even once. I had a bit of trouble by the time I got to the elite four. I guess I didn't really play the game correctly but I just wanted to finish it quickly.
Thinking about now playing Black and White, since that seems to be one of the most loved pokemon games from the past few gens. I'd probably take more time with that one.
