The average difficulty curve smooths out around the second or third gym, but yeah it's rough going before that. Fire types are really useful and rare early on, so if you didn't take Eevee->Flareon there's a Charmander in one of the early grottoes that can help you out.
I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would overall. It's just tongue-in-cheek enough that the edgy story is tolerable. My biggest complaint is the lack of multiple savestates. There's several points where you can get locked in an area with a tough boss fight that you aren't prepared for, so you have to either just get lucky or keep breaking yourself on it until you can grind out a few more levels. It doesn't help that there's usually 5 minutes of dialogue to skip through before the fight actually starts.
