Back in Blue, I was generally more concerned with capturing Pokemon than building up a team, so everything but my Charizard and Butterfree were basically cycled out pretty often as I leveled up and evolved various Pokemon. Sandslash though just seemed cool, and kept it around a lot.
Eventually transferred it to Gold, where it got more usage.
Ruby was where it really got a chance to shine, despite being massively under-leveled when I got to the Elite Four, it's Earthquake really helped get through some annoying battles.
Not really had a chance to use one the last three Gens, maybe the next game I get, I'll transfer a Sandshrew as soon as I can.
