It wasn't copying anything from Gen 1 or any of the popular ideas that have already been tried and true. It has a completely new and unique plot for it's movie. Aura is something that it introduced. All I'm trying to say, is that they simply did a lot of new things with Lucario and it worked.
We can compare this to something like Zeraora who is very clearly inspired by both lucario and luxray both of which are very popular mons that have already been established. Electric is also just a cool mono typing which benefits from being the typing of the mascot of the series. It uses a lot of traits that are already popular instead of GF trying something new and succeeding.
